* * * * *

Micah zipped up the tent against the howling wind. Tommy's flashlight painted warm patterns on the sloping roof.

"Should I tell the Limb Sum Potluck story again?" Tommy asked.

"No," Micah said disdainfully. "It did not make sense the first time."

"It was the dog," Tommy explained.

"I say to you, it does not make sense. Dogs do not speak."

"You mean you've never heard a dog speak."

"Because they do not speak! If such a thing were possible I would know of it. Funfairs would exploit it as they do their tiny women and bearded women and two-headed babies. Verily do I know the temptations of the funfairs. You see I have worked at them from time to time, for mission work is one of the most fundamental tenets of our beliefs. I have yodeled for the chain gangs who trudge the hot roadsides. I have handed out pamphlets beside the Whack-A-Mole--"

Tommy pulled his shirt over his head and tossed it aside. Tommy rummaged through the clothes pile at the corner of the tent, his hair swinging about his bare waist. Tommy’s back was sloping and smooth, the bumps in his spine prominent where they reached for the waistband of his jeans. Micah had thought of Tommy as a weightless waif of a thing, skinny and slight; but the musculature of his arms, Micah realized, was supple and toned. Tommy worked in quinoa gardens, Micah recalled. Micah supposed dragging grain out of the ground made for upper body strength.

Tommy tugged on a new shirt, white cotton, and buttoned from the bottom up. Micah wondered at that. Micah always buttoned from the top down. The stark white fabric was brilliant against Tommy's dark skin, his rich black hair hanging over his shoulder.

Micah realized he was staring. Worse still, Micah realized Tommy had caught him. Tommy’s eyes were unreadable. Tommy’s hands stilled before they reached his top button, his collarbone left exposed.

Keep it that way, Micah thought.

Micah was frightened.
